Overview

  • Historically, Kamloops probably produced more food on-site per person than it does today.
  • There was a sizable infrastructure in place for the processing and storage of regional foods as well as industry support systems, but the majority of these structures are no longer visible.
  • The KXA played a significant role in the local/regional agricultural economy by bringing in visitors and money for events like the bull auction, winter fair, pro rodeo, horse racing, and others.
  • Because the local resource base is suitable for this use, ranching has historically thrived in the area. It is also possible for it to coexist in regions that are also used for logging, recreation, and the habitat of wildlife.
  • Fewer households now support local producers since they tend to charge more due to the increasing cost of living and the accessibility of cheap, mass-produced, imported food.

Kamloops and the outlying areas have a long history of agriculture. A vibrant, financially viable, and resilient local farming industry that maintains and maximises the utilisation of agricultural resources including land, capital, water, labour, and technology will be referred to as a “agricultural Eden” and a regional center for the agriculture sector in years to come.

The City wants to support and promote a local agriculture industry that makes a significant contribution to local food self-sufficiency, land and resource stewardship, a growing, diverse local economy, and ensuring that land is protected and used for agricultural purposes.
