More than 20 million commercial chickens are kept in cages

In 2016, major Canadian grocery retailers declared that they will no longer sell caged eggs by 2025. Today, more than 20 million chickens are kept in cages.

You don’t have to be an animal lover to remember that a series of undercover reports in the 2010s exposed the terrible conditions on Canadian egg farms and prompted companies to go cage-free.

From mainstream media to Facebook news feeds, images of factory farms were ubiquitous. With each image of birds crammed into cages so small they couldn’t spread their wings, many Canadians saw for the first time the downside of a cruel food system.
